Silver Spur Restaurant

Stella and Frank Bedell built the Rancho Burger II in 1963 at 2650 Soquel Drive in Santa Cruz at a time when cows were still grazing in a pasture across the street. They operated the restaurant briefly, but Frank suffered a heart attack and died. Stella invited her brother Art Marsh and his wife Gloria from Kentucky to operate the restaurant. They renamed it the Silver Spur Ranch Restaurant, enlarged it, and a few years later purchased the property.

They owned and worked the Silver Spur for over thirty years, earning a reputation for their buttermilk pancakes, thick slabs of breakfast ham, homemade chili and famous apple pie with cinnamon sauce. They catered to a demand for basic, tasty meals, while raising four children and employing dozens of local teenagers.

In 1998, Art and Gloria sold the Silver Spur Ranch and their home in Santa Cruz and retired to Texas. Today's Silver Spur, still locally owned, offers some of the favorites of the past, using the original pancake recipe and serving up the same monumental slice of ham.

Also offered are modern lighter specialties such as tofu scrambles, fruit waffles, special salads and a variety of desserts. Spanning the gap between old and new and keeping the Spur familiar to its loyal clientele are long-time employees Jean Chao, Hien Ho, and Alfredo Rameno.
